Setting Expectations

As a manager it’s your job to set high standards, delegate effectively, align individual and team behaviour at all levels to the business plan and monitor progress to ensure your team is on track.

  • At induction by discussing what success looks like in the first 90 days.
  • After a short period in the job to maintain momentum and improve performance.
  • Then consistently to encourage good performers to aim higher.
  • When things change the original plan, such as new priorities.
  • When things aren’t going right.

Delegation

Delegation is the assignment of your authority and responsibility to another employee to carry out specific activities. By delegating you achieve more by leveraging your time and to grow the capability of your employees. Delegation empowers employees to make decisions, take action and produce results on your behalf.

It’s critical when delegating that you make good decisions about how much responsibility you give and the quality of your briefing. Good delegation is the ‘sweet spot’ between the twin sins of abdication and micromanagement. You can find more information about delegation here.
